empresspattiI am closing in on 69 and life has gotten much quieter. In a previous life, I was a work by 8a. Now I’m just waking up. Gone are the days of early morning rush to get the kids to school & into work. ABC News & CNN are fond and distant memories. Instead of pounding aerobics and weight lifting, I hit the pool for a workout. My personal style has devolved into a simple mantra: dayside clothes must be as comfortable as my pjs. Bras & shoes are for going outside the house. Inside I'm a (comfortable) slob.
My Daughter (Honeybunny from her infant days) lives right down the street. Every Wednesday she goes with my Grandson (Monkeypants, because he is) to Mommy and Me swim lessons. It started when Monkeypants was 6 months old. I tag along because it is fun. My job is to clap and wave. I also keep Monkeypants busy after, so my Daughter can change from swimsuit to clothes without a little person trying open the dressing room door.
After, we always head out to lunch at Noodles & Co for Mac and Cheese. The 3 of us have a delicious fattening lunch, laughing and happy. On the way home, I sit in the back seat with my Monkeypants keeping him entertained so he does not fall asleep and screw up his afternoon nap.
Our favorite game is Icky Sticky Booger Fingers. He waves his fingers in my face and I made assorted yuck noises and he laughs likes it’s the funniest new thing, every week. When that gets old, I “look” for him in my purse, or in the sky or trees as they whiz by. He is so much fun.
Monkeypants is two now. I’m impressed by his fearlessness in the water, his budding swimming skill and his love of the whole experience. These skills earned him advancement to the next level. No more Mommy in the pool. NanaPat does not need to be the cheering section. It would be a distraction from the teacher.
Wednesdays with my Daughter and Grandson have been a true treasure. Daughter will go back to work soon and Grandson will grow up. This has been so special. I’m glad we’ve had this experience. Monkeypants won’t remember, but NanaPat will never forget.
